One of (potentially) a series of portraits that was brought to mind by the Nirvana lyric: "It's okay to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings", - a glimpse upon those, who feel small, irrelevant, vulnerable, dispensable, and disposable.
Started as a Nirvana tribute piece in November of 2024, 'The Danish Girl Will Have Her Revenge on the ICEy Banks of the Wishkah. With a Pearl Earring.' became what she is now over the course of the second half of January of 2025. This piece is both a look back and a polaroid of the contemporary: a reminiscence of the Soviet past, and its echo in the American present.
Filtered and adjusted through the filter of geographical and generational gap, it still ties the two tightly in their shared sentiment of xenophobia, oppression, and abuse of power. The title becomes a tribute not only to Nirvana, but also to the Seattle bus driver, who stood up to the ICE agents back in 2020, to those, who feel helpless and threatened in this promised land that forgot the promise of law, and also to those, who are still fighting for acknowledgement and mere ability to live just as painfully as in 1930s. This is a tribute to humanity that is still fighting to remain human.
I was never presented with the luxury of being apolitical. I also just cannot bring myself to virtue signalling on social media feeds. And I feel if I could, Joe Strummer would just come back to punch me in the face. To paraphrase: ‘I think people ought to know that I am anti-fascist, anti-violence, anti-racist, and pro-creative. I am against ignorance.’
